Into the Deep.

Have you ever been enjoying a big swell day in the ocean that just gets too big for you? Have you ever been forced under for longer than you expected in a double wave hold down?

Survival instincts instantly kick in as the desperate need to get back to the simple task of normal breathing. What is taken for granted every day becomes paramount.

It was my dad throwing quarters into the deep end of the pool when I was a little girl that started both my love of water and training in extended periods without breath. And later with my late husband, often surfing, spear fishing and free diving that modeled how to plunge to great depths with less panic.

Our relationship with God can feel like this at times, like the big waves or a deep plunge. Maybe fear keeps us isolated or immobile, unable to freely explore the depths of His love. Or maybe you’ve never even tried to approach Him.

Jesus encourages us to throw our nets into the deep (Luke 5:4) even when we’ve been unsuccessful or have tried for a long time. He promises that unlike attempting things on our own, being guided by Him, trusting in Him leads to all things being possible (Matt. 19:26). Going deeper into the unknown of God is the path, although not easy, that holds the breath of life after a long struggle.

What is holding you back from taking a deeper dive into God? How might you encourage yourself and others to go deeper?

“Deep Calls to Deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your billows have swept over me.”
Psalm 42:7
